Background of the study
Migration, particularly rural-to-urban movement, has profound effects on language use and phonological diversity. Among Tiv speakers in Benue State, migration influences speech patterns as individuals encounter new linguistic environments and adopt features from dominant languages. This study examines how migration affects the phonological diversity of Tiv by comparing speech samples from long-term rural residents with those who have migrated to urban centers. Key phonological aspects such as vowel quality, consonant articulation, and prosodic patterns are analyzed using acoustic methods (Ibrahim, 2023). Migration often leads to the convergence of phonetic features as speakers adjust to urban norms, potentially reducing phonological diversity. Conversely, contact with multiple languages may also introduce innovative phonetic variations. The research aims to document these changes, assess the factors driving phonological convergence or divergence, and explore their implications for language identity and cultural preservation (Adeleke, 2024). The findings will contribute to broader discussions on language change in contact situations and inform strategies to maintain phonological diversity amid demographic shifts.
Statement of the problem
Despite the dynamic nature of migration, its impact on the phonological diversity of Tiv speech remains underexplored. Changes in speech patterns due to migration may lead to homogenization of phonological features, thereby endangering traditional linguistic diversity (Chinwe, 2023). The lack of empirical data on these changes hinders the development of effective language preservation strategies and educational policies tailored to migratory contexts. This study addresses this gap by systematically examining phonological differences between rural and urban Tiv speakers, providing critical insights into the effects of migration on language variation.

Significance of the study (100 words):
This study is significant as it investigates the impact of migration on Tiv phonological diversity, providing essential data for linguists, educators, and policymakers. The findings will inform strategies to preserve linguistic diversity amid urbanization and migration pressures (Adeleke, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to Tiv speakers in Benue State, comparing rural and urban contexts through acoustic and sociolinguistic methods.
